TODAY IN SEATTLE-AREA HISTORY, Jan 30

In 1988, Friendship One, a United Airlines Boeing 747, lands at Boeing Field after circling the globe in 36 hours, 54 minutes and 15 seconds, breaking the speed record. Many of the 141 passengers, who include first-on-the-moon astronaut Neil Armstrong, donate $5,000 to be onboard, with funds going to children’s charities. The plane makes two refueling stops, in Athens, Greece, and Taipei, Taiwan, flying 22,997 miles at an average speed of about 623 mph. The victory is short-lived, as less than a month later it is bested by a Gulfstream IV, and in 1992 by an Air France Concorde SST.
