In 1893, the name of Slaughter in South King County is changed by the Legislature to Auburn. The town is first named after Lt. William Slaughter, who died nearby in 1856. Before the name change, a runner from a local hotel would meet trains with a cry of, “This way to Slaughter House!” The new name honors Auburn, N.Y., another prominent hop-farming area. In the 1890s, hops used in making beer are the principal crop of the White River (now Green River) Valley.
