In 1910, an avalanche near Stevens Pass takes with it two Great Northern trains and 96 victims. There are 23 survivors. It is the deadliest avalanche in U.S. history and one of the worst train disasters. The dead were transported on toboggans down the west side of the Cascades to trains that went to Everett and Seattle. The old grade is now the Iron Goat (hiking) Trail.
