A state bill outlawing dance marathons is signed in 1937 by Gov. Clarence Martin. Dance marathons are Depression-era human-endurance contests, where couples dance nearly nonstop for hundreds of hours, as long as a month or more, competing for between $500 and $1,000 in prize money. The law is repealed in 1987.
