TODAY IN SEATTLE-AREA HISTORY, Mar 19

The Nutty Narrows Bridge opens in 1963 in Longview, with a deck wide enough for squirrel traffic only. The $1,000 structure, designed to look like a tiny suspension bridge, allows the creatures to get across Olympia Way without getting squashed by vehicles. Squirrels immediately take to the bridge and later are seen teaching their young how to use it. In 2014, the bridge is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
