In 1971, the Seattle City Council gives preliminary approval to a controversial site for an aquarium just north of Golden Gardens Park in Ballard after considering several sites, including the central waterfront and Fort Lawton in Discovery Park. Dixy Lee Ray, then Pacific Science Center director and future governor, is a big supporter, calling arguments against the site “sentimental emotionalism.” The next year the City Council reverses itself and opts for a central waterfront location, which opens in 1977. |
