Who says you have to be multi-dimensional to get into the Baseball Hall of Fame? Not if Edgar Martinez is any example! On his final ballot appearance, the best pure hitter to ever wear a Mariners uniform, made the grade with an impressive 90.4% of the vote! Edgar, I love you, man!
Other items of note from this year’s ballot are:
Fred “Crime Dog” McGriff did not make the cut, garnering only 40.2% of the ballot in his 10th and final attempt.
Former Mariner and ‘Gar teammate, Omar Vizquel, also captured 40.2% of the ballot, but this is only his second year in the mix.
Reliever extraordinaire, Mariano Rivera, was the first person ever to receive a 100% vote, and Roy Halladay, was not too far behind him at 91.6% of the vote in both of first years on the ballot.
Workhorse starter, Mike Mussina, who will be inducted, either as an Oriole or a Yankee, also made it in with an impressive 81.5% of the vote in his 6th year on the ballot.
Finally, moving ever closer the brink of extinction are druggies; Barry Bonds (7th year, 67.1%), Roger Clemens (7th year, 67.5%), and Sammy Sosa (7th year, 10.4%).
